Bakers to Run Boston Marathon »

Adam and Martha Baker Marathon Adam Baker and Martha Baker Bakers to Run Boston Marathon Martha and Adam Baker of Enterprise, Utah are getting a chance of a lifetime to run in the Boston Marathon. The Boston Marathon is the elite marathon in the United States and each year it is becoming harder and harder to be a part of as they continue to cut the qualifying times down for each age group in order to keep the marathon at their desired size. The Boston Marathon accepts qualifying times from select marathons that they will review the results and validate the runner as a qualified participant. The St. George Marathon is one of those qualifying races and since it happens in the fall it overlaps the Boston Marathon registration and will qualify a runner for 2 years running instead of only 1 year. Martha's female age group had to get the time of 3 hours 35 minutes or below to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Last year it was 3 hours 40 minutes. Martha not only qualified but hit her personal record (PR) this past year at the St. George Marathon with a time of 3 hours 19 minutes. Adam was just shy of his Boston qualifying time at the St. George Marathon, but was picked up as a sponsor Icon Fitness to run in the Boston Marathon this year. I had the chance to sit down with Martha and Adam and talk about the preparation it takes to run a marathon and the advice they have for those who are looking to start running. What got the two of you into running? Martha talked about how she started out running in the Hershey track meet in elementary school and found out she was a pretty good little runner and made it to region. She then decided to run her first 5k at age 9 and she won in her age division. She also ran cross country in high school taking after her older siblings that ran cross country before her. Running was in Martha's blood and she had two great role models with her uncle running several marathons and her older brother who she was able to see in person run in the 100th running of the Boston Marathon. Adam started his running career chasing after Martha when they first met. Adam continued to run with Martha in several 5K runs and even ran the Turkey Trot in St george for kids and family while Martha was pregnant. The first full Marathon they ran was the St george marathon in 2001. They both had a crazy idea to sign up and they each had a goal to break the 4 hour mark. During their run Adam became injured and finished at a time of 4 hours 30 minutes. Martha just broke the 4 hour mark. They always ran short distance before they did their first marathon and didn't realize how much time it really takes to run a marathon. From that point on they decided to each take a year to run a marathon. Martha ran one year and Adam would run the next year. Martha's daughter Anna tells everyone that her mom has a baby one year and the next year runs to lose the baby fat. in 2012 the Baker's ran the St George marathon together again. What kind of food do you eat while training? "I run so I can eat what I like" Martha said as she laughed. They really keep a well balanced diet and try to eat healthy, drink a lot of water and before long runs they load up on a Carb meal with pasta, spaghettis and breads. Known around Enterprise as the "Todd Dawson Meal" What is your running/training schedule for a marathon? Martha runs with a small group in Enterprise at 5:30AM 3-4 times a week on a 45 minute run. Adam wakes up early and runs with Bill Sorensen. "Shout out to Bill" Adam says as he talked about how Bill is his motivation to getting up and running. On Saturdays they do their long runs. They usually meet friends at Brookside or Veyo at 5am or earlier and run the St George Marathon course. They run 18-20 something mile runs. The 20 mile run takes them about 3 to 3 1/2 hours. They try to get back before the kids have been up too long to spend quality family time. What advice do you have for those that are looking to start running? They shared two great ideas that will help you start running. Number 1 - Pay for a race (if you havent ran before do a 5k or a smaller run). Number 2 - Run with other people. The energy you get and the way you feel as you run socially is enjoyable, stress relaving and is the best motivation. Martha said "husbands are not the best motivators but friends are a great idea". You can download Marathon training schedules online HERE that is set up as a 4 month schedule. You train at different levels from beginning, intermediate and advanced. Having a running base of 3-5 miles a few times a week before you start the training will help you out greatly. What kind of shoes do you recommend? The Baker's have about 3 pairs of shoes each that they rotate. They say your pair of shoes will last you about 500 miles. Adam wear's Brooks Launch (HERE). Martha really loves the Altra shoe (HERE) which is a utah base company. Martha said "We go through shoes, a lot of shoes." After each marathon you will be about ready to buy a new pair of shoes. Now that you both are trained what do you do once you get to Boston and how do you prepare? They will arrive early take a tour of the city and enjoy the area. The Boston Marathon has a large 3 day expo with motivational speakers, pre race parties, paper work, and a big pasta dinner the night before the race. The temperature will be in the low 60's for the race. "We will run a little to make sure we stay moving" Martha said as they are very excited for this opportunity and have checked out everything on the course. From heart break hill on mile 21, facebook pointers and tips and all the little hills and sites along the route. (HERE). The runners will start in different waves and they will all run at different starting times. This will be a great time for them to spend with friends, family (Scott and Selma Bushar) running in Boston and a chance to enjoy the overall experience. Martha said that running means a lot to her because she accomplishes something really hard and that is the drive for her. Adam said "Mentally at mile 20 its tough, but after its amazing if you can put your mind to it" Is this something your kids are picking up on? "Some of our children really like running" Martha said. Their kids have ran in the Enterprise July 24th 5k race. They talk about running and want to run in high school and even for BYU. Their kids ask after the marathon "Did you win it?" Martha has found that winning a marathon is all about you and your PR (Personal Record). You get out of it what you put into it. You didn't have to depend on a coach to put you in the game. Your time shows with your practice and it is up to you to put forth the effort and no one benches you if your putting forth that personal effort. They love that their family runs a lot and that is the topic of discussion with family. Adam said " I just want to do my best and have fun". We wish you all the best of luck with your run in the Boston Marathon. Live Coverage of the Boston Marathon Watch the LIVE Stream of the 117th running of the B.A.A.
