Dixie State University to present Steinway Jazz piano recital

David Stevens will perform a jazz piano recital on Feb. 23 as part of Dixie State University’s Celebrate Steinway

ST. GEORGE, Utah — As part of its Celebrate Steinway campaign to become an All-Steinway School, the Dixie State University Department of Music is hosting a jazz recital featuring classically trained pianist David Stevens on Feb. 23.

The program will consist of jazz piano favorites from the finest 20th-century composers and pianists including George Gershwin, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, Theolonius Monk and Chick Corea. Dr. Glenn Webb, chair of Dixie State’s Department of Music, and Dr. Robert Matheson, assistant professor of music, will join Stevens on percussion and bass, respectively.

“The chance to showcase our exquisite new Steinway in a jazz setting is something that I eagerly anticipate,” Jeff Jarvis, dean of Dixie State’s College of the Arts, said. “The range of color and touch of this wonderful instrument will be on full display.”

After receiving classical piano training at Brigham Young University, Stevens went on to tour with the Air Force Bands as a pianist, percussionist, and vocalist. He performed jazz, rock, country, pop and classical music, playing more than 200 shows a year in North America, Europe, and Asia.

“The evolution of jazz piano in many ways can stand for the soundtrack of much of the 20th century,” Webb said. “David’s artistry, humor and love of life will provide us all with a wonderful evening of piano.”

Stevens’ performance will be the fourth recital on the new Steinway that Zions Bank donated to Dixie State in June. The recital aims to raise funding to help the college purchase another Steinway piano and is set to take place at 7:30 p.m. onFeb. 23 in the Eccles Concert Hall on the Dixie State campus.

Tickets are $15 and available through the DSU Box Office by calling 435-652-7800, visiting dsutix.com or stopping by the ticket office in the M.K. Cox Performing Arts Center on the Dixie State University campus.
