Koller and Dougherty of Dixie State Qualify for Wrestling Nationals

Tucson, Arizona – JJ Dougherty and David Koller graduates of Enterprise High School have been wrestling for Dixie State University a NCWA division school and both qualified from Nationals at the West Coast Conference Championships.

The West Coast Conference consists of schools like Dixie state, BYU, University of Arizona, UCLA, USC, etc and they traditionally take the top four from Each weight class. Koller ended up in 6th place over all competing in the 157 weight class that was quite a bit larger than any other weight that opened them to choose the top 7 in that weight to him to Nationals.

Dougherty finished 5th in is weight class of 184 and they took the top four, but with the 1st place wrestler dropping out it gave Dougherty the chance to move on. He is also suffering from a concussion and most likely will not be making it to nationals either. Don’t count Dougherty out as he will heal up and return to Nationals for Dixie State next year as he has had an amazing year along with Koller.

Dixie State Wrestling team fell short of their goals plagued with injuries, but six wrestlers qualified for Nationals out of nine that attended the conference. Dixie State was in 2nd place and fell to 6th after a long 2nd round. The six wrestlers that will move on to Nationals are Ryan Petersen, Daylon Walker, JJ Dougherty(out with concussion), David Koller, Pierce Stowman and Erik Gonzalez.

Nationals will be held in kissamee, Florida March 10th thru the 12th. They will be flying out a couple days early to get in their daily practices. Koller is getting ready for Nationals and said, “I am physically and mental preparing myself to do the best I can.” Koller has high hopes of becoming an all-american by the end of his wrestling career, and is well on his way.  Koller also said about teammate JJ Dougherty he will be leaving behind, “I am very excited by the opportunity to wrestle at the NCWA National Tournament and the only thing that could make this better would be if JJ was healthy and able to come with me.”
