Mrs. Porter Seeks for Donors to Help at Enterprise Elementary

Enterprise, UT – Mrs. Nancy Porter has been teaching at Enterprise Elementary for nearly 20 years and recently was reassigned from 6th grade to 3rd grade. Along with her new role she wanted to make sure her students have the materials they need to succeed, and this is why she teamed up with

Porter’s main goal is to help collect donations for books in what she calls, “3rd Grade Thirsting for Novels.” Porter is determined to help her new students find a love for reading. Porter said, “Reading is the most important thing we as teachers can teach our students. Students have to be able to, not only understand what they read, but to read text smoothly.” Class and group discussions on their books become more meaningful which helps to increase fluency and comprehension.

Enterprise Elementary is part of the Washington County School District and often overlooked as a very rural community in Southern Utah. The students come from different social backgrounds and to take on a project like this would come out of the pocket of the teacher. The reading project is aimed at reaching 60 students to be shared among the different third grades.

The classroom sets of books that they are collecting funds for are to help the students become more fluent readers while learning to love to read. Most of the titles are the start of a series to encourage students to read the others on their own. Porter said, “Reading is the most important skill, that we as teachers, can teach our students. Reading is everywhere! Learning to read will make a difference in our students’ lives.”

They will be using these books in literacy circles and whole class reading. They are in the need of collecting 7 class sets of 25 books to ensure the students will have one book for each month of the school year. The books are different genres to help teach different comprehension strategies.

Porter says, “We live in an era where students love technology, but let us not forget to help develop the love of books too.”

Her project is halfway completed and needs a little more love.

Mrs. Porter will only receive her materials if this project is fully funded by Sep 23, 2016Donate today to help Enteprise Elementary.
