SUU Football Ready For Season Opener
Cedar City, Utah – Southern Utah University (SUU) Football is ready for football after a successful fall camp.
Offensive coordinator Gary Crowton is in his second season with the Thunderbirds and has seen his share of successful teams. Crowton was impressed with the offense in fall camp, and translating that into wins this season will be another story. The Thunderbirds went 3-9 last year and are looking to lean on Senior James Cowser, from Fruit Heights, Utah. Cowser earned first-team all-conference and All-America honors at defensive end last year after setting a Big Sky single-season record with 28.5 tackles for loss. Cowser was unanimously named to the preseason Big Sky all-conference team as the defensive MVP. Crowton is looking to step up this season on offense also with wide receiver C.J. Morgan returning after missing a year with an injury that will help spark the offense. Jarom Healey and Malik Brown also are becoming frontrunners at the running back position, with Pete Williams and Levi Te’o also impressing the coaches.
SUU head coach Ed Lamb talked with media after fall camp about the team starting to prepare for specific opponents, “practice seemed much different Tuesday night than it had for the weeks leading up to that point.”
The Thunderbird’s open their season against Utah State in Logan on September 3. Coach Lamb said “To be able to open the season against a great in-state program like Utah State is certainly a big motivator for our players.”
SUU’s first home game will be September 19 as they host Northern Colorado a Big Sky Conference opponent.
