ENTERPRISE – If you missed last night’s matchup between the Enterprise Lady Wolves and the Kanab Cowgirls, you missed a barn burner that came down to the wire, not just once, but three times as the Wolves held on to defeat the Cowgirls 41-38 in double overtime.
The game started with low scoring from both teams as the 1st quarter ended with the Wolves leading 5-4. At the start of the 2nd quarter, the Wolves went on a run and also kept the Cowgirls from scoring a field goal until near the end of the quarter. However, the Cowgirls fought back nearly tying the game as the first half ended 14-13 in favor of the Wolves.
The Wolves started off the 3rd quarter with a 3 point basket from Lacy Drake and were able to stretch the lead to 9 points halfway through the quarter. Once again, the feisty Cowgirls fought their way back, and the 3rd quarter ended 25-22 with the Wolves hanging onto the lead.
In the 4th quarter, the game became more intense as both teams had players foul out of the game and each side missed clutch free throws. The Cowgirls took the lead for the first time with 1:02 left to play, but the Wolves quickly responded tying the game 32-32. In the final minute, both teams had opportunities to win the game but missed free throws by Kanab and missed field goals by Enterprise sent the game into overtime.
After controlling the overtime tip-off, the Wolves took a 33-32 lead following a free throw by Lacy Drake. A defensive battled ensued with both teams going scoreless until Shae Gardner stepped to the line with 27 seconds left and made one of two foul shots to put the Wolves in the lead 34-32. The Cowgirls brought the ball down the floor and were able to send Carsyn Button to the line who made both free throws, tying the game at 34-34. The Wolves attempt for the win in the final seconds came up short pushing the game into its second overtime.
To start the second overtime, the Wolves once again controlled the tip-off. Jessica Farnsworth was able to make a quick field goal, but the Cowgirls answered with a bucket from Jessi Anderson tying the game again at 36-36. On the next possession, a basket by Lacy Drake put the Wolves up by 2 until the Cowgirls capitalized on a steal by Lily Rogers with 1:10 remaining to tie the game 38-38.
With a minute to go, the Wolves patiently moved the ball around until Tori Phelps was fouled and converted both free throws to give the Wolves the lead 40-38 with 36.5 seconds left on the clock. The Cowgirls had a chance to tie the game, but Tori Phelps took advantage of a mishandled ball and came away with a critical steal. She was immediately fouled and made one of two free throws to increase the Wolves’ lead to 41-38 with 0.8 seconds remaining. The Cowgirls had one last chance to win but failed to convert as the gym erupted. The hard fought battle was the first region win for the Wolves after losing a close one at Millard earlier in the week.
